Job Overview
A Furniture Designer transforms concepts into functional, aesthetically refined products that suit modern lifestyle and workspace needs. The role includes developing innovative designs, selecting appropriate materials, and ensuring alignment with ergonomics, usability, and current market trends. They collaborate with production and engineering teams to create prototypes, refine technical drawings, and ensure design feasibility for manufacturing. This position requires creativity, technical skill, and strong attention to detail to deliver high-quality furniture that enhances customer experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Conceptualize innovative, functional, and aesthetically appealing furniture for residential, commercial, and institutional spaces.
- Conduct research on global trends, materials, sustainability practices, manufacturing technologies, and competitor products.
- Create free-hand sketches, mood boards, concept illustrations, and detailed 2D/3D models using CAD, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Rhino, SketchUp, 3ds Max, or similar software.
- Develop original furniture collections aligned with durability, precision craftsmanship, and modern design standards.
- Select suitable materials, finishes, fabrics, hardware, and components ensuring strength, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness.
- Prepare complete technical drawings, fabrication details, assembly diagrams, and Bills of Materials (BOM).
- Ensure design feasibility by applying Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles.
- Verify structural integrity and ensure compliance with Indian and international standards such as BIS, ISO, BIFMA, and E1 emission norms.
- Optimize designs for modular construction, flat-pack systems, minimal material wastage, and export-friendly transportation.
- Collaborate with engineering and prototyping teams to build, evaluate, and refine prototypes.
- Test prototypes for strength, stability, durability, ergonomics, finishing, and user comfort.
- Refine and iterate designs based on testing results, production feedback, and user insights.
- Support Quality Assurance teams in establishing checkpoints to maintain uniformity and craftsmanship.
- Work closely with Production, R&D, Engineering, Procurement, Sales, Marketing, QC, and Export teams for seamless development.
- Attend plant meetings to explain design specifications, resolve manufacturing issues, and fine-tune tools, jigs, or fixtures.
- Coordinate with suppliers to evaluate new materials, components, and hardware for upcoming collections.
- Assist marketing teams in developing catalog content, lifestyle imagery, and product presentation materials.
- Manage multiple design projects simultaneously, ensuring adherence to timelines and budgets from concept to production readiness.
- Handle customized design requirements for B2B, institutional, and export clients.
- Maintain accurate documentation, design archives, version control, and project reports.
- Support installation teams and contractors with detailed drawings and technical clarifications.
- Present design concepts to internal teams, clients, and international partners with clear rationale.
- Prepare BOQs, cost estimates, technical specs, and client presentation materials.
- Communicate effectively with craftsmen, production teams, and design engineers to ensure smooth execution.
- Stay updated on advanced technologies, smart furniture trends, eco-friendly finishes, and innovative manufacturing methods.
- Suggest improvements to existing products to enhance durability, performance, and customer satisfaction.
- Mentor junior designers and encourage creativity, precision, and continuous improvement.
- Participate in workshops, training programs, and seminars related to furniture design and manufacturing advancements.

- Expertise in creating accurate technical drawings, fabrication drawings, detailed 3D models, renderings, and complete production documentation.
- Skilled in CAD and 3D modelling tools such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Rhino, SketchUp, Fusion 360, 3ds Max, V-Ray, KeyShot, and other visualization software.
- Strong hand-sketching, visualization, and freehand drawing abilities for rapid ideation.
- Ability to develop furniture layout plans based on client requirements and precise site measurements.
- Deep knowledge of furniture materials including solid wood, engineered boards, veneers, metals, upholstery fabrics, leathers, hardware, adhesives, and finishes.
- Strong understanding of ergonomics, human-centred design, anthropometrics, and comfort-focused design principles.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes, joinery techniques, hardware systems, CNC basics, tolerances, and construction methods.
- Experience with prototyping, workshop practices, and familiarity with tools and machinery used in furniture manufacturing.
- Strong understanding of Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and flat-pack design principles.
- Ability to evaluate prototypes for performance, durability, ergonomics, and finishing quality.
- Sound knowledge of BIS, ISO, BIFMA, export compliance, and relevant safety and quality standards.
- Awareness of global furniture trends, design movements, and market behaviour.
- Competence in preparing Bills of Materials (BOM), cost estimates, and detailed product specifications.
- Ability to design for corporate offices, government projects, institutions, hospitals, hotels, and commercial spaces.
- Strong collaboration skills for working with production, engineering, R&D, procurement, marketing, sales, and quality teams.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills for internal reviews, client discussions, and global partners.
- Strong problem-solving skills to resolve design, production, and engineering challenges.
- Effective time-management and project-management skills with the ability to handle multiple deadlines.
