Job Overview
The Layout Engineer plans and optimizes plant layouts, production flow, and material movement in an engineering cast components manufacturing setup. The role focuses on improving space utilization, safety, productivity, and efficiency while supporting quality standards, smooth operations, and timely delivery across foundry and manufacturing processes.

Key Responsibilities
- Plan, design, and develop foundry, machining, and finishing plant layouts to support efficient production.
- Design and optimize factory and foundry floor layouts, including machinery, molding lines, pouring stations, and material handling systems.
- Optimize material flow, manpower movement, and equipment placement to improve productivity and reduce cycle time.
- Ensure effective space utilization while maintaining safety, ergonomics, serviceability, and maintainability.
- Prepare detailed 2D and 3D CAD layout drawings, models, simulations, and installation plans.
- Analyze existing layouts to identify bottlenecks, waste, and excessive material movement, and recommend improvements.
- Support new product development and introductions by adapting layouts for new patterns, molds, cores, tooling, and automation.
- Coordinate with production, foundry, machining, quality, maintenance, engineering, and project management teams.
- Ensure layouts comply with Indian and international quality, safety, and environmental standards such as ISO, IATF, and RDSO where applicable.
- Conduct time and motion studies, clearance studies, and feasibility analysis using lean manufacturing principles.
- Optimize layouts to reduce material handling cost, scrap, rework, and operational expenses.
- Interpret technical drawings and specifications to ensure layouts meet customer and process requirements.
- Perform dimensional layout checks, tolerance analysis, and verification to support precision cast components.
- Assist in troubleshooting layout-related issues affecting casting quality and propose corrective actions.
- Collaborate with quality teams on inspection requirements, fixture concepts, and layout validation.
- Maintain accurate layout documentation, drawing records, revisions, and version control.
- Prepare layout proposals, reports, presentations, and cost-benefit analysis for management approval.
- Support capacity expansion, equipment upgrades, and process changes through effective layout planning.
- Coordinate on-site validation and implementation of layouts during project execution.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by reviewing and updating layouts as production needs evolve.
- Stay updated with industry trends, technologies, and best practices in layout engineering and foundry operations.
Key Skills
- Plant and factory layout planning for foundry, machining, and finishing operations.
- Strong knowledge of foundry processes including molding, core making, melting, pouring, shakeout, and finishing.
- Understanding of casting principles such as shrinkage, gating, risering, and dimensional control.
- Proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and similar tools for layout design and documentation.
- Ability to prepare and interpret detailed engineering drawings, specifications, tolerances, and GD and T.
- Knowledge of material flow planning, material handling systems, and space optimization in heavy industrial environments.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing, 5S, Kaizen, value stream mapping, and continuous improvement techniques.
- Capability to analyze layouts to identify bottlenecks, waste, safety risks, and productivity gaps.
- Experience in conducting time and motion studies, clearance studies, and layout simulations.
- Understanding of Indian and international quality, safety, and environmental standards such as ISO 9001, IATF 16949, ISO 45001, and RDSO.
- Basic knowledge of dimensional inspection, tolerance analysis, and metrology tools including Vernier calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and CMM.
- Ability to support new product development, tooling changes, automation, and capacity expansion projects.
- Problem-solving and root cause analysis skills for layout, process, and quality-related issues.
- Strong coordination and communication skills to work with production, quality, maintenance, engineering, and project teams.
- Good documentation, drawing control, reporting, and version management skills.
- Project management basics to plan layout changes with minimal production disruption.
- High attention to detail and quality orientation to ensure reliable and safe cast components.
- Time management skills to meet project timelines and delivery commitments.
