Job Overview
The Assistant Manager – Costing and Finance will be part of the Accounts & Finance Department, responsible for product costing, cost control, and profitability analysis for a food processing company manufacturing and exporting frozen and dehydrated products, covering end-to-end production costs across materials, processing, packaging, cold storage, and logistics, while supporting budgeting, pricing decisions, margin improvement, and ensuring strong financial controls through close coordination with operations, procurement, and commercial teams for domestic and international markets.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and update standard, actual, and activity-based costing systems for frozen and dehydrated food products.
- Prepare and manage multi-level Bills of Materials (BOMs) and cost roll-ups capturing complete manufacturing and supply chain costs.
- Track end-to-end production costs including raw materials, labor, processing, packaging, cold storage, overheads, and logistics.
- Monitor actual versus standard costs and perform detailed variance analysis on materials, yields, labor, overheads, and logistics with corrective actions.
- Analyze raw material price fluctuations, yield shrinkage, and operational inefficiencies impacting product costs.
- Prepare detailed cost sheets and profitability analysis by product, batch, customer, and market (domestic and export).
- Support pricing decisions using cost-plus models, target costing, landed cost calculations (FOB, CIF), and margin impact analysis.
- Drive cost control and margin improvement initiatives through waste reduction, process efficiency, packaging optimization, and sourcing evaluation.
- Manage accurate inventory valuation for raw materials, WIP, and finished goods using FIFO/FEFO with proper reconciliation.
- Track production efficiency, yield performance, and loss control across processing units and cold storage facilities.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and scenario planning for commodity price volatility and logistics cost changes.
- Maintain costing data, BOM accuracy, and financial controls within ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle, or Tally.
- Develop Excel-based costing models, dashboards, MIS reports, and analytical insights for management.
- Generate cost trend reports highlighting risks, variances, and profitability improvement opportunities.
- Ensure proper overhead allocation, cost absorption, and compliance with accounting standards and internal policies.
- Support internal and external audits with cost documentation, reconciliations, and variance explanations.
- Collaborate closely with production teams to validate yields, efficiencies, and cost drivers.
- Partner with procurement on material pricing, supplier strategies, and cost impact assessments.
- Work with commercial and export teams on customer-specific costing, tender pricing, and margin analysis.
- Participate in new product development costing, feasibility studies, and profitability validation.
- Analyze CAPEX proposals for processing equipment and cold chain infrastructure with ROI evaluation.
- Drive continuous improvement in costing systems, reporting automation, and best-practice cost accounting processes.
Key Skills
- Advanced product costing expertise including standard costing, absorption costing, activity-based costing (ABC), and multi-level BOM management.
- Strong understanding of end-to-end manufacturing cost structures covering raw materials, processing, labor, packaging, cold storage, overheads, and logistics.
- Proven ability in variance analysis for materials, yields, labor, overheads, and usage with root cause identification and corrective actions.
- Experience in costing for frozen and dehydrated food products including shrinkage, mass balance, yield loss, and seasonal price fluctuations.
- Product-wise, customer-wise, and market-wise profitability analysis and margin improvement strategies.
- Cost control and optimization skills through waste reduction, process efficiency, packaging improvement, and sourcing evaluation.
- Budgeting, forecasting, target costing, and scenario modeling under commodity and logistics volatility.
- Expertise in landed cost calculations for exports including FOB, CIF, freight, duties, and currency impact.
- Strong inventory valuation skills including FIFO, FEFO, WIP costing, and reconciliation processes.
- Hands-on ERP experience (SAP CO/FI/MM, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, Tally, or similar manufacturing systems).
- Advanced Excel proficiency for costing models, dashboards, scenario analysis, and MIS reporting (pivot tables, lookups, automation).
- Familiarity with data visualization tools such as Power BI or Tableau for management reporting.
- Knowledge of overhead allocation methods, cost absorption, and internal financial controls.
- Understanding of food processing operations including cold chain economics, perishable inventory handling, and compliance-driven cost impacts.
- Awareness of export economics including Incoterms, logistics optimization, duties, and pricing dynamics.
- Strong financial analysis, break-even modeling, and ROI evaluation for process improvements and CAPEX.
- High attention to detail and accuracy in cost builds, reconciliations, and reporting.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset for identifying cost drivers and margin opportunities.
- Excellent cross-functional collaboration with production, procurement, and commercial/export teams.
- Clear communication skills to present costing insights and business impact to management.
- Strong time management and ability to handle budgeting cycles, month-end closures, and urgent pricing requests.
- Continuous improvement mindset for system automation and best-practice costing processes.

Candidates with prior exposure to Food processing, FMCG, Agro-Based Manufacturing, Frozen and Dehydrated Product Operations, Export-Oriented Units, Cold Storage and Cold Chain Businesses, International Trade Finance, Export Costing, Customs documentation, forex management, large-scale production environments, and Inventory-Intensive Manufacturing Operations will be given high priority.
Experience
Candidates should have a minimum of 4 to 9 years of proven experience in the Costing and Finance function within a Manufacturing / Processing Environment, preferably at Assistant Manager or equivalent level. The candidate must have strong hands-on experience in product costing, manufacturing finance, cost control, variance analysis, budgeting, forecasting, inventory valuation, MIS reporting, and financial controls. Experience in food processing, FMCG, agro-based manufacturing, frozen and dehydrated product units, export-oriented organizations, cold storage and cold chain operations, and inventory-intensive production setups is highly preferred. Exposure to export costing, international trade finance, logistics cost analysis, customs documentation, forex transactions, and large-scale production operations will be considered a strong advantage.
