Battery Engineer – WNTBE18082023
- Design the protection circuit module including schematic, PCM layout, and BOM for selection of specific components to meet requirements.
- Develop the engineering requirement specification for the battery pack and protection circuit module, along with the custom IC parts for the best performance and cost.
- Drive Design for Manufacturability (DFM) with vendors during the early design phase.
- Validate the protection function (over-voltage, over-current, over-temperature, and ESD).
- Validate fuel gauge performance along with fine-tuning the models for accuracy.
- Design and fabrication of battery electrode materials including: implement mixing and coating processes. Electrode drying, electrode punching, and stacking.
- Battery assembly, testing, and finishing.
- Use characterization equipment to evaluate materials and devices including: microscopy, thin film analysis.
- Devise research and testing protocols.
- Write battery testing schedules.
- Install production equipment or systems.
- Data collection, analysis, statistical understanding, writing and following Standard Operating Procedures. (SOP’s)
- Prepare contracts, disclosures, applications, procedural documents, and technical reports.
- Research engineering applications of emerging technologies.
- Supervise engineering or other technical personnel; supervise/train co-op students.
- Monitor hazardous waste cleanup procedures to ensure proper application of nanocomposites or accomplishment of objectives.
- Understand the Concept of Operations (ConOps).
- Assess system level architectures, possible trade study assessments, and update recommended architectures.
- Understand Power requirements based on ConOps and flow down requirements.
- Review and provide input to system and subsystem level requirements.
- Understand/modify verification and validation plan if needed including verification matrix (success criteria for requirements) and track items to completion.
- Perform requirements and interface management, including preparation of change requests, assessment of impacts and management of requirements traceability, updates to verification planning and verification criteria, and interface control documents.
- Provide written and oral statuses in the form of presentations or reports.
- Prepare materials and track open actions for integrated analysis cycles.
- Investigate technology development opportunities for power considerations.
- Work with team members to perform risk management, including identification, mitigation planning and tracking.
- Adapt to new design constraints, functions, and configurations as needed.
- Define test flow, identify, and account for dependencies, and collaborate with the battery assembly and integration teams.
- As needed, initiate collaboration with component and instrument owners to reach and document concurrence.
- Review content of Power Interface Control Document (ICD) and collaborate with other subsystem teams to define Rover requirements and capture subsystem needs.
- Integrate requirements flow-down (for example: Level 2 to Level 3 to Level 4).
- Manage the requirements from environmental specifications and applicable splinter documents.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Brainstorming and implementing mechanical design concepts in all phases of the development cycle. Generating innovative designs while taking into consideration SPC and DFM.
- Generating dimensional and tolerance analyses.
- Conducting design reviews and driving file release process.
- Assisting the development of manufacturing processes and fixturing
- Performing design validation and characterization from prototype through MP testing.
- Driving failure analyses and design of experiments (DOEs) to develop design solutions and implement corrective actions.

Key Skills
- Experience with Battery Life Cycle, Certification, and Engineering processes.
- Working knowledge of requirements including safety, fault tolerance, and unique disciplines.
- Familiarity with documentation databases and SharePoint sites.
- Familiarity with state-of-the-art requirements management and model-based systems engineering tools.
- Experience with Li-ion batteries.
- Experience using EVKits, impedance metres, Maccor, or Arbin battery tester.
- Experience in system integration of batteries with PMIC and charger IC.
- Experience with Simulation/Design tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, Pspice, Altium, PowerDC, or other.
- Experience with coding for testing and data processing using Python, C++, or Colab.
- Experience and understanding of lithium ion cells used in consumer electronic applications.
- Basic knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures in the space hardware field, such as mechanical and electrical system design, engineering drawings and sketches, and material selection.
- Experience with power requirements and analyses.
- Experience with the development of space systems requirements documents (including functional requirements and verification success criteria) and verification plans.
- Experience with the design, assembly, verification, testing, and operation of space power systems.
- Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures in the space hardware field, such as mechanical and electrical system design, engineering drawings and sketches, material selection, and design software and tools.
