Job Overview
- Design and develop engineering cast components, machines, systems, or assemblies based on customer drawings, specifications, and application requirements.
- Create, review, and modify accurate 2D drawings and 3D models using CAD tools such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CATIA, or similar software.
- Translate conceptual designs and customer requirements into detailed engineering specifications and manufacturable designs.
- Ensure designs are suitable for foundry processes, machining operations, fabrication methods, and production feasibility.
- Support plant, shop-floor, and equipment layout planning with focus on component flow, workstation arrangement, space utilization, and ergonomics.
- Collaborate with layout engineers and production teams to optimize layouts for material movement, safety, productivity, and workflow efficiency.
- Review customer drawings and provide technical inputs, feasibility feedback, and value-engineering suggestions.
- Conduct feasibility studies, design calculations, tolerance analysis, and basic simulations to ensure functionality and manufacturability.
- Coordinate closely with foundry, production, machining, pattern, quality, procurement, and project teams for smooth design implementation.
- Prepare and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs), part lists, layout drawings, and technical documentation for manufacturing and procurement.
- Support prototype development, trial runs, first-off approvals, and design validation activities.
- Analyze design- and layout-related quality or production issues and support root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Perform design modifications and layout adjustments based on testing results, production feedback, or site conditions.
- Ensure designs and layout considerations comply with Indian and international engineering, safety, and quality standards.
- Apply Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles to optimize cost, quality, and assembly efficiency.
- Assist in optimizing existing designs, layouts, and processes for continuous improvement in performance, efficiency, and cost control.
- Maintain proper design documentation, revision control, and engineering change records.
- Provide technical guidance to drafting teams and junior engineers during design and layout execution.
- Participate in design reviews, layout approvals, and cross-functional discussions throughout the product lifecycle.
- Stay updated with new materials, technologies, design tools, and layout optimization practices relevant to the industry.
- Strong proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CATIA, Creo, or similar tools.
- Ability to create accurate engineering drawings, layouts, and 3D models with proper GD and T, dimensions, and tolerances.
- Solid understanding of core engineering principles including mechanics, materials, manufacturing processes, and system behavior.
- Knowledge of foundry processes, machining operations, fabrication methods, CNC, laser cutting, and production workflows.
- Ability to design components and systems that are practical, manufacturable, reliable, and cost-effective.
- Basic to working understanding of plant, shop-floor, equipment, and facility layout planning.
- Skills in space utilization, material flow planning, workstation arrangement, and basic ergonomics.
- Understanding of Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and basic Design for Test (DFT) concepts.
- Familiarity with Bills of Materials (BOMs), part lists, revision control, and engineering documentation practices.
- Ability to interpret customer drawings, technical specifications, and industry standards.
- Exposure to prototype development, trial runs, testing, and first-off or validation activities.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for resolving design, layout, and production-related issues.
- Basic knowledge of quality tools, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement practices.
- Awareness of safety, regulatory, and compliance requirements in manufacturing and industrial environments.
- Ability to perform basic feasibility checks, tolerance analysis, and design validations.
- Understanding of layout constraints such as clearances, interferences, routing feasibility, and clash detection.
- Knowledge of materials selection, cost considerations, and production timelines.
- Effective coordination and communication skills for working with cross-functional teams including production, quality, procurement, and projects.
- Ability to manage multiple design tasks, revisions, and deadlines with good time management skills.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in drawings, models, layouts, and documentation.
- Willingness to learn new tools, technologies, materials, and layout optimization techniques.
- Continuous improvement mindset with openness to feedback from shop floor, testing, and customers.
